We wanted to update you on recent events concerning the Grand Canal Dell development project:

Last Tuesday, as the Palisades Fire devastated thousands of homes and threw Los Angeles into chaos, developers of the Grand Canal Dell project attempted to call an emergency L.A. City Council meeting using “Rule 24: Emergency Council Meeting” to overturn the Los Angeles Transportation Commission’s prior ruling.

Councilwoman Traci Park, City Attorney Hydee Feldstein-Soto, and several LA City Councilmembers deemed this an insensitive and inappropriate use of the emergency rule, especially during an actual city crisis.

The request was withdrawn before a vote could take place.

The Coalition for Safe Coastal Development has been vigilantly monitoring the situation all week to prevent any further attempts.

Today, Wednesday, January 16, 2025, marked the deadline for such actions by the developer, which has now passed.

We invite you to celebrate this victory; however, please remember that the Coalition still has financial obligations to its legal team. We would greatly appreciate any support you can provide to help the Coalition meet these obligations.

Congratulations to the Coalition for their excellent work!

The following is a message from the Coalition for Safe Coastal Development:

In these darkest times, we’d like to share some happy news.

We have confirmed that the Transportation Commission’s decision stands, and the Venice Dell Project as we know it (a.k.a. the “Monster on the Median”) is dead and not moving forward.

The timing is awful for sharing this incredible news while our hearts are heavy for all those who have suffered unimaginable loss in the fires. We will save the celebration for a more appropriate time as we focus our attention now on helping those in need to recover.

That said, we want to take this opportunity to extend our utmost gratitude to our fearless leader of CD11, Councilwoman Traci Park. We have watched in awe and admiration as Traci continues to show up with her amazing CD11 staff and guide her constituents through these horrific times with strength, grace, and full transparency. And, of course, we have endless appreciation for our first responders and everyone working so hard to manage this disaster.

It has never been clearer that political priorities must change from housing at any cost to putting safety and infrastructure first in our vulnerable seaside communities and throughout Los Angeles. We will continue the conversation when appropriate. For now, we are sending out love to all those who need it most during these difficult times.

Thank you for all of your support in making this victory possible!

With appreciation-
The Team at Safe Coastal Development
